S1W3 - Ducks Roll Bears in PAC-12 Opener
EUGENE, Or. - In one of the weekend's most intriguing matchups, #5 Oregon dispatched the #21 Cal Bears by the score of 42-21 at Autzen Stadium. Both offenses were clicking throughout the game, piling up over 800 yards of total offense combined, but as per the usual in shootouts like these, the team with the better defense ended up winning. Cal's new "Bear"-raid offense out-gained the Ducks' deadly attack by over fifty yards, but also turned the ball over 5 times to Oregon's defense, with three of those turnovers coming inside Oregon's 25 yard line. After each of Cal's turnovers, the Ducks promptly struck back, putting the Bears even further in the dust.
De'Anthony Thomas led the way for the Ducks' short, but effective offensive day. Thomas is now emerging as a true Heisman contender as the Junior added three more touchdowns to his total. With two rushing touchdowns and a long kick return touchdown, DAT now has 10 touchdowns on the season, and that number is destined to double-if not triple by the end of the season. Thomas finished with 149 yards on the ground. Marcus Mariota also pitched in a 44 yard touchdown run to start the scoring in the first quarter. Mariota also added two scoring tosses going 7/10 in his limited role on Saturday.
On defense all three starting corners (Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Terrence Mitchell, and Troy Hill) and strong safety Brian Jackson had interceptions, while DT Taylor Hart's clutch fumble recovery in the fourth quarter capped the victory for Oregon.
The Ducks are headed to Boulder to take on the Buffs next weekend to start their brief mid-season road trip.
